London has some of the world’s best hotels, and it’s made for eating alone: Soho is full of counter seats. The big national museums are free, and so are the best skyline views, if you book ahead. Walking tours, pub crawls and run clubs make it easy to meet people. The trade-offs are the prices and the crowds, and phone thieves in the busiest streets.
This guide is built from the live Google ratings of 22 places, Hostelworld reviews of seven central hostels, travel guides written in 2025 and 2026, and London-based writers. Every rating links to its listing.
When to go
- May, June and September: long days and the best chance of good weather
- July–August: the busiest months at the big sights

Solo safety
- London is safe overall; the main risks are pickpockets on the Tube and at the big sights
- Keep your phone away from the kerb, where thieves on mopeds and bikes snatch them
- Use a black cab or an app, never an unbooked minicab
- Soho, Shoreditch and Camden can get rowdy at closing time
